There is a lot of excitement and criticism of the upcoming release of Disney’s Frog Princess.  Parents who have gone through their daughter’s “princess” phase and struggled with purchasing Disney items with bold pictures of princesses without color are simply proud.  In addition, for women who spent their childhood seeking a definition of beauty that related to them, we are elated.  With a black president and beautiful brown girls living in the White House like royalty, maybe the new Princess Tiana is not as pivotal as when Disney announced the project.

Tiana_2_jpgDivas Ranting was able to see a long version of the movie trailer at the Blogalicious Conference in October. The room was full of diverse women of color who were wiping tears after experiencing the voices of the movie and the encouraging nature of its theme. Tiana being black was only part of the impact, the clip told our story in a way that too many of us could connect. It wasn’t simply a princess story, it was the story of hope, persistence and courage that have been in our struggles and successes. It was the message we all hope to give our children about a future they will create.

How does taking your little princes and  princesses to see the Princess and The Frog make you feel?

How does it make the little girl in you feel?

I am very excited about taking my two daughters and son to see The Princess and the Frog. We can never underestimate any image that is put in front of our children. I know how tainted I was growing up with Marcia Brady and Seventeen magazine. Yes, we should be further along but as far as my kids are concerned; if there are positive images today that are not shuffling around on TV, I wll make sure my kids are apart of feeling good about themselves. And I will work to make sure there are more.

I can not wait, I and two other Fairy God-Mothers have put together an outing of tea and a movie for the little Princesses of our church. We are having the girls wear their prettiest dress and putting tiaras and gloves on them for a day of elegance while we enjoy a Princess Tea Party and then off to the show together to view The 1st. Afican American Disney Princess Move The Princess and The Frog. The little girl in me has waited for this a long time.

I just read a wonderful post on another site about the strong family that is shown in the movie. The parents are married and the movie is a story about dreams and perseverance. I am so excited to hear the music and the voices of “us” in a Disney film. Yeah!

Funny you ask, our Jack and Jill of America ( Memphis Chapter) rented out the entire theatre (350 seats) where we will view it toghter. We have several girl scout troops, Delta Gems, L.I.N.K.S. will also join us. After our viewing we will survey the little “princess” to see how the movie made them feel.

I don’t have any children but I am BEYOND excited about this movie. I grew up on Disney movies and always wondered why there wasn’t a Black one. It didn’t stop me from getting wrapped up in the magic that is fairy dust and Prince Charming. Now at 24 years old, I get to re-live Disney movies but through the eyes of a princess that I can relate to. Loves it!

Just saw the movie with my eleven and two-year old. We loved it! Because my parents are from Louisiana, I could relate to the cajun feel of the movie. My two-year old danced through the entire movie. I loved the entire cast! How beautiful it was when Ray finally got to be with Angeline:-) Go see the movie. Take your daughters, nieces, cousins, moms, everyone!
Can’t wait to get it on DVD to add to all the other princess movies we’ve collected over the years!
